Alka Yagnik is an Indian playback singer.
She mainly sings for Hindi films. One of the most popular
singers in Bollywood in the 1990s,
Alka has won numerous music awards, including the National
Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer twice,
the Bengali Film Journalists Association Award twice,
and the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer
seven times from a record 36 nominations.
Alka has recorded over 20,000 songs in over a thousand
Indian films and various Indian languages,
including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Malayalam, Marathi,
Manipuri, Odia, Punjabi, Bhojpuri,
Tamil and Telugu, in her four-decade career.
Twenty of her songs have been included in the BBC's Top 40
Bollywood Soundtracks of All Time list.
As of January 2023, she is ranked at the top of YouTube's
Music Charts and Insights' Top Global Artists list.
She topped the chart for 331 weeks with 371 million views.
Alka was recognized by Guinness World Records as the
world's most streamed artist with 15.3 billion YouTube views
in 2022.
The record book further reported that "Kolkata-born Yagnik,
56, has maintained her position as the most popular artist on
the platform for the past three years with 17 billion streams
in 2021 and 16.6 billion in 2020."
